Freya Howard is an emerging Writer/Director, Innovator and Educator based in Sydney (Gadigal Land). Non-binary, Queer and passionate about telling complex, real and character-driven stories that are elevated by a touch of strangeness.
They have spent the past 4 years working in a wide variety of roles across Film, TV and Theatre, from Pre-production to Post-Production to gain a boots-on-theground understanding of every angle of the filmmaking process. They have predominately focused on Assistant Directing, Talent Wrangling and Stage Managing, and have crewed on productions for Amazon, Warner Bros., ITV, Kennedy Miller Mitchel, Made Up Stories and Stan.
Their body of written and directed work includes a short, experimental sci-fi film, ’Again’ produced for Hibernation—Festival of the Lo-Fi, Webseries Pilot ‘Flat’ and a series of short, poetic films for Vertigo Magazine.
Freya has non-fiction work published in Academic Journals and Magazines, and has completed a Transdisciplinary research Thesis exploring the links betwen Cinematic Music and the emotional interpretation of memories through the UTS TD School.
Innovation and Academics:
Since 2021 Freya has also been working in the UTS Faculty of Transdisciplinary Innovation as a Casual Academic, guiding students through alternative economies and the balance between originality and practicality in implementing large projects.
However, they have also been working in transdisciplinary teams to solve complex problems with creative methods since 2017 as part of their degree in “Creative Intelligence and Innovation” – particularly delving into design thinking, systems thinking and alternative economies. This has led to opportunities working with clients like SBS, Zenith Media, Telstra, Local Government and Transport for NSW on problems ranging from integrating accessible urban agriculture in Sydney LGAs to re-designing streaming service interfaces, to re-imagining employee upskilling.
